WHY IT WORKS

The Gap Is Always At Eye Level

A sun visor is a rectangle that hinges down from the roof, and it stops at the top edge of the windscreen. The problem is that the sun at seven in the morning or five in the evening sits lower than that edge and higher than the road — exactly in the band where you need to see. A tinted strip across the top of the glass is illegal in many places and cuts the whole view; this panel goes on the visor instead and covers only the band that hurts.

Why It Turns White

Low sun does two things at once: it washes out the top of the windscreen, and it bounces off a wet road straight back at you. Both are reflected light, which is what a polarizing panel is made to deal with — the view comes back with the trees and the lane markings in it, instead of a bright rectangle where the road should be.

There are two panels on the arm, and the quick switch is the point: one for the hard light of midday, one for the flatter light of evening, rain and fog, where the problem is not brightness but missing contrast. In winter it does the same job on snow glare, which is worse than summer sun because it comes from below as well as above.

The lens is 32 cm wide and 12 cm tall, which is wider than the lower edge of most sun visors — that extra width is what covers the corner the visor never reaches. The arm extends 18.5 cm past the clamp, so it also works in a small car where the visor is short and the windscreen is steep.

How to Use

1. Fold the original visor down, pinch the two spiral plastic spacers on the clamp, and slide the extender over the visor — keeping the panel clear of the rear-view mirror.
2. Press the button, pull the arm out to the length you need, and tilt the lens until the bright band above the road is covered.
3. Release the button to lock the arm and fold the visor back up. The clamp stays on, so nothing has to be refitted next time.
