01 / TIGHT CORNERS

Where A Drill Gives Up

Under a kitchen cabinet, the drill body hits the shelf before the bit reaches the board. Behind a drawer, the chuck needs clearance the frame will not give. Along a wall skirting, the angle is simply wrong. The usual answer is a shorter bit, a bent wrist and a screw that goes in crooked. The other answer is to put a right angle head on the end of the drill and let the body stay where there is room.

Bend Around The Frame

The flexible extension takes the drive round a curve. Set the head where the work is, let the shaft bend back to where your hand can reach, and the drill stays outside the cabinet while the bit works inside it. That is what makes overhead work and deep assembly jobs less of a fight — you are not holding the whole drill in a space that was never designed for it.

The Screw Stays On

Inside a cabinet there is no second hand free to hold a screw while you line up the bit. The magnetic locking head holds it for you, which is most of the battle in a tight space. Fit the bit, drop the screw on the magnet, guide it to the mark, and drive — no fumbling under a shelf where you cannot see your fingers.

One Shank, Most Drills

The connection is a standard 1/4 inch hex — 6.35 mm — which is what most handheld power drills and electric screwdrivers take. Push the shank into the chuck, fit a standard 1/4 inch hex bit into the magnetic head, and you are working. The detachable handle can be turned to whichever side gives you the best grip for the angle you are working at.

How to Use

1. Push the 1/4 inch hex shank into your drill or electric screwdriver and tighten the chuck.
2. Fit your drill bit or screwdriver bit into the magnetic locking head.
3. Check the bit is seated firmly before you start the drill.
4. Turn the handle to the side that suits the angle you are working at.
5. Work as normal and let the angled head take the bit into the corner.
